Emulating the sun with a strobe

The golden hour sun is beautiful, magical and one of my favourite times to take pictures.   The only problem with that is that it's only available for a limited time each day, and that's also weather permitting.. duh.

So what do you do when you want a beautiful golden hour light, but the sun isn't cooperating? Create your own!

Here is the before image with just natural light.  It's okay but unless I blow out the background or go silhouette  there is nothing interesting.

Looks like the sun decided to peek in on our shoot, eh? Nope, it's just my SB900 at 1/2 power outside the house, with a CTO gel attached.  So next time you are at a shoot, and wish you had some amazing light pouring through the window, bust out your flash!
